Andi and Murray are really happy to announce that they have been accepted to take part in the Shit Box Rally 2021 Autumn driving from the Gold Coast to Alice Springs via the Gulf of Carpentaria to raise much needed funds for the Cancer Council.
Murray was diagnosed with bowel cancer in January 2017. After a series of treatments including radiation, chemotherapy and two operations in mid-2018, Murray is now fighting fit and all clear. Throughout this ordeal Murray was supported by his wife Andi and 4 beautiful daughters Ruby, Willow, Pip and Eadie, as well as family and friends - but it was the care and dedication of the incredible medical practitioners, carers and support staff encountered along the journey that was really inspirational.
Men often don't discuss or open up about their medical health. After Murray’s experiences he committed to openly discussing men's health whenever the opportunity arose. It was through these encounters that he discovered just how many people are touched by the scourge of cancer.
So Andi and Murray have been motivated to raise money for the Cancer Council, and what better way than driving our little $200 1982 Daihatsu Charade around the country. A 3 cylinder, 993 cc engine coupled to a lethargic 2 speed automatic transmission directs nearly 40 horsepower to those tiny 13" front wheels. Ground clearance is all of 6" when loaded - no doubt there will be some challenges and fun times along the way.
We hope you can get on board to follow the journey and provide support.
Shitbox Rally is the largest community lead fundraiser for the Cancer Council in Australia and is now in its 12th year. Part of the participation is that all teams have to raise a minimum of $5,000 but most teams raise well above this amount as you can see with the 2021 Autumn rally target set at $2,000,000 plus. These funds go to the Cancer Council and we are extremely proud to be doing our part to support such a worthy charity. The fundraising is the hard part, so any donation you can give is greatly appreciated. Please make sure to follow our progress via this page and the blog.
Thanks a heap from Andi and Murray.
Shitbox Rally is the adventure of a lifetime challenging participants and their cars, worth no more than $1,000, on a 7 day drive across Australia to raise money for cancer research.
The rally is not a race – it’s a fun, colourful, unpredictable adventure with participants travelling at their own pace in smaller groups. Vehicles often break down but “we never leave anyone behind” and each night is spent camping beneath the stars and celebrating the day’s achievements. It all adds up to an incredible opportunity to see Australia’s vast and beautiful countryside and make lifelong friends, many brought together after experiencing cancer themselves or seeing cancer impact family and friends.
Since it’s inception the rally has been the largest fundraiser for the Cancer Council nationally.
Thanks to the Thirst Thursday beer appreciation team - raising $170.00 through the purchase of traditional hand crafted Bilums (string bags) from my workplace in the mountains of PNG. Setting the fashion trend for our district - well done lads!
To all you anonymous donators - we can’t contact you individually (being the nature of anonymity), but a a great big thank you for your generosity and kind donations - We thank you and the Cancer Council thanks you.
