We're delighted to be accepted to participate in our 5th Shitbox Rally in May 2021. This year, 125 teams will be driving their Shitboxes from Alice Springs to the Gold Coast via the Gulf of Carpentaria, then a week later the second group of 125 teams will travel the reverse route Gold Coast to Alice Springs.
Our travels begin a week prior to the event's start, driving our 1985 Toyota Celica via Kalgoorlie, Goldfields Highway, and Great Central Road.
Shitbox Rally is the largest community-led fundraiser for Cancer Council Australia and is now in its 12th year. To participate teams are required to raise a minimum of $8,000 but most teams raise well above this amount, with the 2021 Autumn rally target set at $2,450,000.
These funds are directed to the most critical Cancer Council research projects and we are extremely proud to be doing our part to support such a worthy, charitable cause. Fundraising is the hard part, so all donations are greatly appreciated. Please make sure to follow our progress via this page and the blog post below.
Shitbox Rally is the adventure of a lifetime challenging participants and their cars, worth no more than $1,000, on a 7 day drive across Australia to raise money for cancer research.
The rally is not a race – it’s a fun, colourful, unpredictable adventure with participants travelling at their own pace in smaller groups. Vehicles often break down but “we never leave anyone behind” and each night is spent camping beneath the stars and celebrating the day’s achievements. It all adds up to an incredible opportunity to see Australia’s vast and beautiful countryside and make lifelong friends, many brought together after experiencing cancer themselves or seeing cancer impact family and friends.
Since it’s inception the rally has been the largest fundraiser for the Cancer Council nationally.
The route has been announced for the 2020 Shitbox Rally|Autumn and looks a cracker at just under 4000km with a 50/50 split of sealed and unsealed roads. 6 stopovers that we have never been to let alone heard of so that will be interesting!!!
Without your support of Cancer Council and the funds raised through Shitbox Rally all of this wouldn't happen. no funds raised = no rally likewise no rally = no funds raised. So we need your help to help support Cancer Council researchers.
Mike & Bruce
We have in our possession what is our oldest vehicle (35yo) with the highest speedo (435000km) to perform in the longest rally (6500km) over the most days (4 to the start line + 7 on the actual rally)
What could go wrong!
Well we have hopefully (fingers crossed) sorted one of the most important factors on a Shitbox during the rally...…..overheating! The Celica was showing signs of this while on the highway but we have this now sorted with a new Radiator fitted along with a Hi-Flo Thermostat. So far so good after testing in the recent heat on the freeway.
Stay tuned BAT friends...…………………………………..
Progress on the cosmetic surgery is well under way but now we need to run some health checks on the heart & soul of the BATBOX Racing CELICA!! She's well worn and getting a bit tired so over the next 80 days we need to make sure she has another 6500km left in its old bones.
Thanks to the team at Richards Tyrepower in Osborne Park who have once again supported us with a set of GOODYEARS to safely get across this great nation of our. Thanks to Bryn, Richard for your continued support, please support them when you need new tyres & expert advice.
NEWSFLASH: 2020 Shitbox Rally organisers have announced, due to the unprecedented situation we are currently experiencing in Australia, that we will be postponing this years Autumn Shitbox Rally to May 2021.
What does this mean for our supporters and the people and organisations that have already stepped up to the plate and generously donated and supported our 2020 vehicle prep??????
THE SHOW GOES ON! yes we will continue to get the mighty old BATBOX Racing Celica ready for the very challenging route across OZ, but most importantly we will continue our push to fundraise for cancer research in Australia and we have already lifted our target for 2021 to $20000 from $10000.
Our health is our most important asset which is more relevant today than ever in our history, so join us on this unknown journey and help continue to fight cancer head on with Cancer Council.
Thank you, stay safe and look after each other
The BATBOX Racing Team.
A HUGE thank you to everyone who has donated so far to Cancer Council and the Australian research teams that will help fight this disease. Some very familiar names keep popping up and we do genuinely appreciate you continued support over the 6 years we’ve been fundraising. It’s not an easy task and we know we sound like a broken record but you guys make it a little bit easier. To the new donors, welcome to the BAT Team. Over the years we’ve had BATVAN (3 rally’s),BATBOX and this year BATbox Racing. The cars ready, we’re ready, now let’s beat Cancer to the finish line. Thank you, Mike & Bruce.
Amazing, that’s what all of these people and companies are that have chipped in both big and small and given generously to Cancer Council. Your donations fund Australia’s vital research to offer Cancer patients better outcomes and treatment options now and in the future. Without research…..nothing changes.
thank you BATteam. 🦇
We have had a fantastic surge of support over the past month now that the 2021 Rally is full-steam ahead. You may notice that we adjusted up our fundraising target three times, the latest target being an odd number $26,719.
If we are able to pass this target, it will push our 5-rally total since 2016 to $100,000.
We have to thank all those sponsors, friends, and family who have so generously donated to this worthy cancer research cause.
A huge thanks, Mike & Bruce.

Cancer Council is one of the largest non-government funders of cancer research in Australia. We conduct and fund research studies across all cancers and all stages of the cancer journey.
Thanks to the community funds raised such as Shitbox Rally we can fund world-class research that reduces the impact of cancer for everyone.
Almost $24 million has been raised by Box Rallies to date, supporting ground-breaking projects such as:
These projects wouldn’t be possible without your support.
